College admissions boards are looking for more than good grades and high scores, they want to know that their potential students have experience outside of academics. It is often thought that the clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities a college bound student is involved in plays no true role in the admissions decision process, but that is not true. All students that apply to college have a relatively similar structure by which they are judged, most typically, grades and testing. College admissions departments are interested to know what a student is best at, and where their passions lie. "Distinguishing yourself in one focused type of extracurricular activity can be a positive in the admissions process, especially for highly selective institutions, where having top grades and test scores is not enough," Katie Kelley, admissions counselor at IvyWise admissions consultancy and a former senior director of admissions at MIT.
