It’s that time of the year again! The application process for college scholarships is starting to open up, which means that you have to start looking into how you want your application to look for universities. However, we are not just simply here today to talk about what this is going to be like; we are also here to talk about the effects it can have on you from a mental health standpoint. These are conversations we all have to be having with ourselves and our families. This is an all-hands-on-deck process between the student, their parents, and any other academic advisors, like ourselves, who can come in to lend a hand.

We work with students and parents all the time to make sure that this goes as smoothly as possible while also giving them an avenue for certain scholarship opportunities, like our Young Achievers Scholarship and more. It’s one of our main goals every year, and we're looking forward to fulfilling it again in 2026, but it all starts with making sure you’re comfortable with it and in a good headspace to proceed.

In this blog, we will look at what applying for scholarships means to your mental health and stress management during this process.

Should I Apply Early for a Scholarship?

You might be asking, should I apply for a scholarship early? Could that be a mistake to rush the application? Those are totally normal questions to ask; we get them all the time. That’s the main question we want to focus on because it stems from the stress of many students and parents with applying.

For a lot of colleges out there, whether big or small, the selection committee will actually be happy to see you get an application in early. It could increase your chances of winning, and it might show the selection committee that you are really passionate about this. It also shows that you’ve clearly been thinking about this for a while and have been planning it out; that’s something they will really latch onto before even reading it.

Think About The Cost of Your College Choice

Think about it from a cost perspective. College is getting more expensive year by year, so you have to be able to factor that in when deciding on your major and how the cost will affect that if you can gain a good scholarship opportunity. This is something that adds to the stress; all of these things connect, and nothing is ever separated. Depending on the cost of tuition, if you’re someone who plans to dorm on campus, make sure you have an idea of what schools you can afford. This way, your search narrows it down to the decision you make on your scholarship.

Quality Experience Versus Having Too Much

How much is too much? Of course, scholarships look for experience, they look for results, and leadership skills that shape who you are to meet the criteria of winning that scholarship you apply for. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have to try harder to obtain these by doing as much as you can. Quality over quantity! That’s a motto that always matters the most with anything in life; it’s no different than with a scholarship. Showing a selection committee that you have your work cut out for the right moments in life through your education and other skills you obtain is vital.

Planning Your Time Effectively

The next factor is twofold: enjoying your senior year more with less stress and planning your life out better. Listen… we get it, if you’re someone who is a senior or even a junior in high school, you want to enjoy your final two years without any added stress with what you’re already dealing with in regular school. Mixing in just regular college applications with scholarship applications can be a hassle too. If you’ve already done extensive research and feel comfortable with a few early choices, that can help free up your time well enough to focus on other needed activities and studies.

Find the Best Resources to Help You!

Finally, and we can’t stress this enough, look for the best resources out there that will help you with any of these different circumstances. If you can do this, it will relieve SO MUCH of the stress you could end up feeling. Thankfully, we got you covered; we have those resources. So much of our website is derived from educating and helping you with your frequently asked questions.

We have a tab for what we call the College Money Talk. This is something that every family deals with. Sitting down with your parents to have a conversation about how college will be paid for and the expectations that will be set on you to manage it correctly, depending on who and how it’s paid for. A lot of this page dives into the “emotions” of what this process is like, which makes it perfect to talk about in this blog. Give it a read!

We haven’t delved too much into it, but another great resource on our page is the 12 Mistakes to Avoid. Whether it’s not signing up for scholarships at all, not planning effectively, or foregoing professional advice, these 12 mistakes are huge for the conversation we just had throughout this blog. Many of the 12 mistakes lean on the scholarship conversation. We can’t recommend it enough!

In terms of scholarships themselves, if you have any pressing questions about which ones here locally or nationally work best for you to apply for, give our scholarship pages a read as well. Our Young Achievers Scholarship is now open! Only the first 1,000 applicants will be considered, so get your application in soon! Check out our Local WNY and National Scholarship pages too, and if you have any other questions, give us a call or email us through our contact form. Talk soon!
